How to prepare for Microsoft Business Exams
Best for business users and power users, with a focus on product capabilities, business scenarios, terminology, and the appropriate use of end-user tools.
Use Navigating Microsoft Certification Study Materials to choose between courses, documentation, videos, and practice tests. The exam study-material collections provide links for individual exams.
Business exams are introductory, but they can still test detailed distinctions between products, capabilities, roles, and business scenarios. Previous technical experience is not normally the focus; familiarity with the product and the decisions made by its users is more valuable.
Study Time
Section titled “Study Time”As a starting point, allow about one week of focused preparation, then adjust based on your familiarity with the product and your results on unfamiliar practice questions. Use objective coverage and understanding, not elapsed time, to decide when you are ready.
Where Do I Start?
Section titled “Where Do I Start?”Study Guide
Section titled “Study Guide”Replace examcode in https://aka.ms/examcode-studyguide with the lowercase exam code. For example: https://aka.ms/ab730-studyguide.
The study guide defines the skills measured and is the source of truth for the exam scope. Use it to keep your preparation focused and check its change log again shortly before the exam.
How to Prepare
Section titled “How to Prepare”How Current Business Exams Differ
Section titled “How Current Business Exams Differ”The current business exams have different experience expectations:
- AB-730 expects familiarity with generative AI productivity tools, including Microsoft 365 Copilot and agents, and comfort using core Microsoft 365 apps for common business tasks. Hands-on product use is an important part of preparation.
- AB-731 focuses on recognizing AI opportunities, planning adoption, aligning investments with business goals, and leading organizational change. It does not require coding, but Microsoft expects familiarity with Microsoft 365 services, Microsoft Foundry, general AI capabilities, and business adoption or change-management work.
Use the current study guide for the exact scope because Microsoft can revise these exams and introduce additional business credentials.
- Read the study guide and turn each objective into a checklist item.
- Complete the Microsoft Learn course or another current primary course that covers every objective.
- Practice applicable product tasks when the objectives describe using or configuring an end-user tool. See How to lab for Microsoft Exams for environment guidance.
- Take the official Practice Assessment if one is available for your exam. Research every incorrect or uncertain answer instead of memorizing the question.
- Use the study-material guide and collection for your exam only when you need another explanation or more practice.
- Use the exam sandbox and exam-experience guide before exam day.
How to Know When You Are Ready
Section titled “How to Know When You Are Ready”You should be able to explain each objective in your own words, distinguish between similar products or capabilities, and choose an appropriate solution for a business scenario. Practice Assessment results are most useful when the questions are still unfamiliar and you can explain why each alternative is right or wrong.
